Vitamins

  • Take vitamins with a meal. Your body uses digestive enzymes, when you consume food and these enhance absorption of nutrients.

  • If you have trouble swallowing vitamin capsules, you can open them, and add the contents to yogurt or juice.
  • You may be already taking a multivitamin daily and have decided to add eye vitamins. If so, you can continue the multivitamin.
  • One enhancement that will stimulate digestive enzymes is a little apple cider vinegar just before you eat. Another digestive stimulant is a thin slice of ginger root.
  • For people who need to take antibiotics: between your antibiotic dosages take acidophilus supplements. Probiotics will enhance the build-up of the digestive tract’s good bacteria which are damaged or killed by antibiotics. Elderly patients, especially, should take acidophilus regularly to support the digestive process.
  • Some vitamins and nutrients, such as lutein and vitamin A compete – so don’t take them at the same time.

Enzymes

  • If you are supporting strong digestion by taking digestive enzymes, you generally should take them along with food. This also assists in reducing chronic inflammation.
  • However, some targeted enzymes such as Nattonkinase and Serrapeptase should generally be taken with an empty stomach. This is because their role is to enhance the break-down of debris in blood and tissue that contributes to inflammatory (including autoimmune) conditions.

Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine) is another water soluble vitamin that leaves the body rapidly. Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a fat soluble nutrient that supports the immune system. The D3 form is the most readily absorbed. It assists in absorbing calcium and phosphate. The body is able to synthesize it from sunshine, but especially in the wintertime, the amount of sunlight exposure is inadequate to produce enough Vitamin D. Many of us think about cutting down on sugar – mostly when we consider our weight. However, there are many essential, well-researched reasons for reducing or eliminating sugar from our diets.

Sugar is loaded into soft drinks, fruit juice and pretty much all processed foods – from bologna to cheese spread, not to mention baby formula. The health problems arise from too much sugar, no matter the kind of sugar. In processed foods, high-fructose corn syrup is the prime culprit, but first the facts.

The Facts:

  • Research reports that sugary drinks changes muscle metabolism – resulting in reduced ability to burn fat, and in turn resulting in flabby muscles.1
  • Sugar suppresses the immune system, making white blood cells less effective at fighting disease.2
  • Sugar consumption increases risk of cardiovascular disease and heart attacks3-7
  • It is found to be even more significant than saturated fats with respect to contributing to cardiovascular disease8
  • It raises LDL and lowers HDL9
  • Sugar consumption increases the risk of Alzheimers10,11 A research group at the University of Wisconsin found that the brain may react to excess refined sugars found in food as if they were a virus or bacteria.
  • It increases the risk of macular degeneration12
  • Sugar increases risk of obesity and metabolic syndrome 13-15
  • It increases risk of tooth decay 16, 17
  • High blood sugar coupled with performing a mentally challenging task is associated with high levels of cortisol, a stress hormone which is known to impair memory.18
  • Excessive glucose is detrimental to brain functioning. It slows neural communication, increases free radical inflammatory stress on brain, interferes with synaptic communication, causes neurons to misfire and send erroneous messages.18
  • In addition there’s a link between drinking diet soda and suffering a stroke.19
  • A 11+ year Swedish study of 42,000 men aged 45 to 79 found that those who drank two or more sodas or sweetened beverages daily had a 23% greater risk of heart failure.21
  • A 2016 study finds that chronic inflammation (sugar is one of the foods that causes inflammation) is a cause of, not a result of Alzheimer’s22. Cutting down on sugar thus becomes even more important.

Is there any Healthy Sugar?

Our bodies use glucose for energy. Our cells metabolize 80% of the glucose we consume, and the liver metabolizes the remaining 20%. Fructose, however, is metabolized solely by your liver – putting a heavy load on it. Too much fructose constitutes a heavy metabolic burden on the liver. Not only that, fructose goes straight to fat.

Types of sugars

  • High fructose corn syrup (extensively used in processed foods) is 55% fructose and 45% glucose. Countries that have the highest use of high fructose corn syrup also have the highest rates of diabetes.
  • Fructose (fruit sugar) is a simple sugar found in fruits and vegetables. In whole fruits and vegetables there are nutrients also present. Honey contains fructose, as well as also nutrients and antioxidants.
  • Glucose (dextrose) is a simple sugar and comes from grapes and corn, and is the sugar found in your blood
  • Table sugar (sucrose) is half glucose and half fructose.
  • Splenda is not a sugar, but a chlorinated artificial sweetener with many bad health effects.
  • Agave is highly processed, and is 80% fructose.
  • Honey is about 53% fructose, but raw honey has as many antioxidants as spinach — when used in moderation.
  • Stevia is a sweet herb which is safe in its natural form.
Synthetic sweeteners such as aspartame which is linked to serotonin and dopamine interference, hyperexcitability, and nerve cell degeneration and should be avoided.23

Conclusion:

There’s no “healthy sugar” — it’s all about moderation. At least the fructose in fruit (whole, not juice) and the lactose in milk provide other nutrients and so have some value. Honey, molasses, maple sugar and agave are all simple sugars with fattening calories and not a lot of nutrition. They are sweeter than table sugar, so less is enough to feed your sweet tooth.

There has been lots of research about how stress, depression, anxiety and other mental concerns impact health, but not a great deal about how such stressors impact vision. Nonetheless, many researchers agree that there is a strong connection between the two. No part of the body exists in isolation. The way that stress affects the immune system, the respiratory system and the presence of inflammation in the body are intertwined. All three are associated not only with health problems, but with vision problems. Chronic stress both negatively effects good circulation and impacts our ability to digest food well. This reduces the ability of the body to deliver essential nutrients to the eyes and other organs.

Stress and the Immune System

Our modern fast-paced life contributes to our experience of feeling stressed, harried, overwhelmed — and this experience contributes to a host of health concerns, not least our vision. For a start, stress is known to impact the general immune system directly. General immunity is in turn tied to our digestive system’s ability to function properly. Some researchers have additionally associated the increased use of antibiotics with a decrease in beneficial bacteria in the gut and corresponding weaker immune systems.

Stress and Oxygen Availability

Under stressful situations we breathe less deeply which reduces blood levels of oxygen. Lowered levels of blood oxygen means that less oxygen gets to the cells of the body, including the cells of the eye. When the retina receives less oxygen, cell damage and cell death result.

Stress and Inflammation

Scientists know that stress and depression increase chronic inflammation in the body. Increased experience of stress in conditions like PTSD and phobias activates the stress response in immune cells to release cytokines.1 Targeting inflammation as a way of treating these conditions is a possible future subject for investigation. C-reactive protein is a biochemical which marks the presence of systemic inflammation has been associated with stress disorders like PTSD and major depressive disorder (MDD).2

Stress and Eye Disease

Researchers have connected quality of life with many eye conditions including glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts and other conditions.

  • Glaucoma

    Researchers have associated a life of stressful experience with glaucoma, finding that anxiety/depression are higher in patients with un-diagnosed glaucoma. In other words, the anxiety/depression are not caused by the patient being aware of their condition. 3 Scientists have pointed to stress as a cause of glaucoma. Since the late 1990’s scientists have indicated that stress is a major factor in both acute closed-angle glaucoma and open-angle glacuoma.

  • Macular Degeneration & Stress

    While it is clear from the research that patients with macular degeneration have higher rates of anxiety and depression, those conditions as a contributing cause are not so clear. There are anecdotal reports that macular degeneration patients feel that their vision is worse when they are stressed. In part, this ties back to the glaucoma research. When stressed, we breathe more shallowly. When we breathe more shallowly the body and the retina get less oxygen and vision worsens. This is one reason why eye exercises like palming are so helpful. As we relax away from staring at the computer (for example) our breathing improves and our entire system, including our eyes, normalizes a bit.

    Wet macular degeneration is associated with inflammation and so there is a likely connection between stress and wet AMD. Researchers at Ohio State University have begun an NIH-sponsored study to determine whether or not the connection is causative.4

  • Cataracts

    One of the contributing causes of cataracts is over-consumption of alcohol. More than one alcoholic drink a day doubles the risk of developing cataracts. While the causal relationship is indirect, it is true that stress due to any number of psychological reasons can cause alcoholism. Chronic physical stress due to injury, dental pain, or stress-related restricted movement of the head and neck also increases the risk of cataracts. As discussed above the experience of feeling stressed limits the amount of oxygen we can take in which in turn starves the cells of the body, including the eyes, of oxygen.

  • Central Serous Choroidopathy

    Central Serous Choiroidopathy (CSC) has a clear tie to stress. Most patients with CSC are young men with aggressive “type A” personalities, and their experience of feeling stressed, under pressure and overwhelmed is an important risk factor. These “type A” personalities often also experience hypertension, lowered immunity and sleeping problems, all of which are associated with the body’s inability to cope with stress.5

  • Macular Edema

    Type A personalities are also at greater risk of developing macular edema than most people and it often appears in times of acute stress.

  • Asthenopia (tired eyes) and Computer Vision Syndrome

    Researchers evaluating the habits of Chinese college students found that mental status was an important factor in whether they suffered from asthenopia.6 Similarly, researchers found that psychosocial factors were part of the contributing factors to call center employees in Brazil.7

  • Dry eyes

    A meta-analysis (a study evaluating eleven studies) of metabolic syndrome risk factors and dry eye syndrome found that hypertension, one symptom of inability to physical cope (often expressed as frequent anger or anxiety) with stress was a risk factor for dry eye syndrome.8 Another study found that use of anti-hypertensive medications was also a factor. And yet another study of more than 300 bank employees found that those with a type A personality were more likely to experience dry eye syndrome.9

Manage Stress

As part of our eye disease prevention protocol we recommend that you manage the level of stress in your life. Not only should you take time-out from computer and mobile devices screens, but you should take time out for yourself.

Take time to take a quiet walk every day – without earphone music to keep you going. Take a look at the world around you instead. Other mild exercise such as swimming or yoga helps to keep anxiety or the feeling of being overwhelmed at bay.

Spend some time quietly with your eyes closed. Some people enjoy non-focused meditation. A cat nap will help others, even if they don’t “sleep.” Start dinner and lie down while it’s cooking to give yourself a 15 minute break.

And, particularly before bed, get off the computer and do something you enjoy. For some people, reading a book (not an ebook!) is relaxing … for others, painting, gardening, or needlepoint. Make time each day to do what you enjoy doing in order to live a more relaxed life.

Not Enough Sleep?

There is a significant correlation between getting enough deep sleep and overall state of health, and most of us could verify this through personal experience. Research has shown that cumulative loss of sleep can lead to a wide range of serious health conditions, from heart disease to a lower quality of life.1

Eye health and function will also be affected by under-sleeping, and chronic insomnia may be linked to chronic eye troubles. When attending to eye conditions, it is wise to address any abnormalities in our sleep, and insomnia should not be overlooked.

Insomnia

Insomnia refers to difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking irregularities, and can occur in short intervals or become chronic — lasting over a month. The elderly, women, those with heart conditions, suppressed immunity and obesity most often report experiencing insomnia.2

Insomnia can often be due to a more serious condition, sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is defined as the obstruction of proper airflow during sleep, and the cessation of breathing for considerable intervals. These symptoms will typically occur over a significant period of time, causing chronic sleep disruption.3

Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) occurs when part of the nasal tissue called the soft palate collapses during sleep restricting oxygen consumption. Optic neuropathy, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, floppy eyelid syndrome, and retinal vein occlusion are some of the conditions often found in sleep apnea patients. Difficulty in recovering from other conditions, such as macular degeneration is more common in patients suffering from OSA.

Sleep Apnea & Macular Degeneration

One study on the connection between sleep apnea and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) found that sleep apnea likely leads to resistance to recovery from treatment for AMD.4

Sleep Apnea & Glaucoma

Additionally, studies have connected sleep apnea and symptoms of glaucoma (the second-leading cause of blindness).5

Though we cannot conclusively determine what effects insomnia has on all eye troubles, we now know that long-term loss of sleep is correlated with more serious symptoms of eye degeneration.

Common Vision Drugs May Cause Insomnia

Some drugs prescribed for common eye conditions may actually contribute to insomnia and in that way worsen overall health. For example, about 1% of vision condition patients who take Visudyne report insomnia. This drug is often prescribed for macular degeneration, choroidal neovascularization, retinal detachment and other retinal problems. Insomnia was reported for 1-2% of glaucoma patients: Xalatan (1.7%), Lumigan (1.9%), Timolol maleate (2%), Latanoprost (1%) and Cospopt (1.4%).

If you are taking vision or other drugs that you suspect are causing insomnia you should work with your medical provider to see if the problem can be eliminated through adjustment of your prescription(s).

Solutions for Better Sleep

When experiencing chronic sleep disturbances or insomnia, we now know it is wise to address them, rather than letting symptoms persist long-term. Experts suggest attending to sleep challenges as soon as we are able, looking to basic causes, and implementing recommended healthy-sleep habits such as:
  • Creating a regular sleep schedule (avoiding daytime naps), and not relying on weekends for sleep “catch-up.”
  • Limiting intense exercise in the evening and night.
  • Limiting TV viewing and all “screen time,” including cell phones, for two hours before a planned bedtime.
  • Refrain from peeking at your cellphone during the night
  • Reducing or eliminating the consumption of caffeine, nicotine, or alcohol, particularly in the late afternoon and evening.
  • Using meditation, yoga, gentle stretching, or other stress-reducing and calming practices.
  • Receiving acupuncture or acupressure, as these therapies may be useful alternative treatments for insomnia and general stress. 7

Sleep Position

Sleep position is also correlated with physical health, as well as eye health. One study found that sleeping at a 30-degree angle was superior to lying flat for those with glaucoma. 8

Therapeutic Support

There is evidence to support the inclusion of psychological and therapeutic support for the management of insomnia as well, such as biofeedback and multi-faceted cognitive behavioral therapy (often referred to as CBT-I).9 The effectiveness of non-pharmacological therapy for insomnia has been recognized quite extensively. Thoughts, emotions, and stresses that are correlated with the sleep disturbances are systematically addressed, and healthy sleep routine is supported, leading to greater overall relaxation and balance. 10

Supplementation and Complementary Medicines

Melatonin is a common supplement suggested for managing the symptoms of insomnia, and many find it to be very helpful, as it assists in regulating circadian rhythms. One study found it to be beneficial for an elderly population struggling with chronic sleep disturbances,11 and another recognized its benefits for a general population of people exhibiting standard symptoms of insomnia.12

Magnesium therapy has been used in a clinical study to address insomnia and related restless leg movements during the night, and symptom improvement was noted.13

Research also points to the benefits of supplementing with magnesium, melatonin and zinc for insomnia, and still other studies recommend a multi-vitamin supplement regimen which includes the addition of calcium.14

Many other alternative medicine options are available for balancing sleep and reducing or eliminating symptoms of insomnia over time. We recommend the following nutrients, in addition to the above supplements:

  • Valerian Root, American Skullcap, and Lemon Balm as sedatives
  • B-vitamins for overall physiological balance2

We all have experienced a correlation between what we eat and how we feel at some time in our lives, and now modern research strongly emphasizes the connection between diet and health. One of the key terms in the conversation around health today is inflammation. When the body is inflamed systemically, ill health will inevitably result. When we take measures to reduce inflammation, health improves!

Inflammation, identified medically as a swelling of tissues in response to injury or infection. It arises as part of the body’s natural defense mechanism as it attempts to remove damaged tissue, poisons, pathogens, or foreign bodies. Our experience of internal inflammation is often experienced as general fatigue. We now know that chronic inflammation can have damaging effects on arteries, connective tissues, the brain, and potentially most systems of the body. For example, inflammation of cells of the immune system contributes to fatty deposit accumulation, gradually hardening to arterial plaque. This gives rise to arteriosclerosis in the lining of the heart’s arteries and plaque accumulation in blood vessels supplying the brain causing stroke.2

As the relationship between inflammation and various negative health conditions has become verified, science is now looking to inflammatory biomarkers when assessing causes of symptoms and conditions. Biomarkers are measurable substances in the body such as enzyme or hormone levels. These biomarkers help medical professionals identify cellular, metabolic, and immune system damage, as well as blood circulation irregularities caused by inflammation. In other words, scientists have linked chronic inflammation with unusual and unhealthy patterns in key systems and functions in the body.3 There is an observable correlation between biomarkers for inflammation and conditions such as cardiac arrest, COPD, and even cancers. Thus, how we manage inflammation can contribute to our lifespan and wellness. 4

Diet and inflammation

A primary benefit of the surge in research into inflammation has been the increased knowledge of diet and lifestyles that cause inflammation, and those that can reduce and eliminate it. Though we do not all respond to foods and beverages in the same ways, it can be observed that particular foods are problematic for overall health, and contribute to inflammatory responses.

The Vision Diet recommends avoiding refined carbohydrates and sugar, sodas, hydrogenated oils, fried foods, and processed meats. Foods observed to reduce or ‘turn down’ the inflammatory response are: olive oil, leafy green vegetables, fatty fish, and some fruits, nuts, herbs and spices. 5

There are many healthy diet options available to us today, yet one that has been researched at length in connection to reducing inflammation is the Mediterranean diet. In one study, researchers discovered that those who most closely adhered naturally to a diet that included olive oil, fruits and vegetables, dulses, fish, and high-antioxidant foods and beverages, had lower markers for inflammation. Study participants who consumed greater quantities of cereals, refined products, sugar, and excess alcohol had higher markers for inflammation and heart disease. 6

The Vision Diet

We recommend a modified Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes vegetables and fruits, whole grains, beans, seeds and nuts, fresh herbs and spices, and good fats, as well as high-quality fish, eggs, and dairy.1, 6 See our diet recommendations for better vision.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants are powerful inflammation reducers. The immune system produces highly effective compounds to fight infection, the presence of foreign bodies, and tissue damage. However, at the same time these substances can produce excessive inflammation which generates free radicals that can damage healthy tissue. Over time enough damage to healthy tissue results in disease and poor health.

The body does produce natural antioxidants to fight free radicals, but if there are deficiencies in the diet, or the diet is primarily the standard American diet (“SAD”), then the body’s antioxidants are unable to maintain balance. Research shows that providing the body with the right balance of nutrition through diet, supplementation, and lifestyle helps regulate the functioning of the immune system, and thus allows the body to prevent and cure disease symptoms.7

Antioxidants are most commonly found in foods such as: kidney beans, blueberries (best if wild), artichokes, pecans, russet potatoes, prunes, apples, and other berries.8 Carotenoids give fruits and vegetables their color, so most any colorful fruit or vegetable will be high in antioxidants. Herbs and spices are also known to be highly beneficial Many of us have also heard of the potential benefits of chocolate, coffee, and wine for antioxidants! 9 Read more about increasing antioxidants in your diet.

In the eye, the presence of free radicals and lack of antioxidants is directly related to the incidence of many types of eye disease. For example, the carotenoid antioxidants lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin, along with other antioxidants are found in greater quantities in the eye than in any other part of the body. Their presence or absence is directly correlated to eye diseases such as macular degeneration.

Nutritional Supplementation and Inflammation

Research now strongly suggests that supplementation is very helpful in raising levels of antioxidants in the body and fighting inflammation to support optimal health. Here are just a few examples of the extensive nutrient/inflammation research:
  • Supplementing with CoQ10 and selenium can reduce one inflammation biomarker, C-reactive protein, significantly, and are notably superior to placebo.10
  • Bioavailable curcumin, taken orally, has also been found to substantially decrease inflammation. 11 The chemical curcumin is present in high amounts in turmeric root, and has been gaining the attention of the medical field as a very potent anti-inflammatory supplement.
  • In a clinical study, Vitamin-D, Calcium, and Chromium supplements were also found to be influential in reducing inflammation, particularly in women testing positive for Vitamin-D deficiency.12
  • Other studies have found that omega-3 fatty acids are helpful in balancing C-reactive protein levels – an indicator of excessive free radical levels.

Lifestyle and Inflammation

Along with diet, one’s lifestyle often needs to be reassessed when treating systemic inflammation.
  • Because excess weight can be a contributing factor to inflammation, exercise and weight-balancing measures are often suggested.14
  • Exercise is one of the most effective ways to increase longevity and lifespan! Researchers have found it to be a factor in reducing chronic inflammation. In one such research study scientists found that exercise reduces the inflammatory immune response in the lymph nodes and spleen.15 It has even been found to be a factor in determining the type and quantity of prescription medication
  • Manage your level of stress. This is true both generally (for example, take a walk, meditate, do yoga) and in terms of your vision health, take a break from the computer periodically and do simple eye exercises like palming to reduce vision stress.

Do You Still Smoke?

The connection between smoking and vision health is well established. There is a significant correlation between damage to vision beginning before your child is born and continuing to illnesses that manifest late in life. The very best thing you can do for yourself and your family is to do everything you can to stop smoking. Now!

When you smoke, whether cigarettes or other ‘smokables,’ your body produces hydrogen cyanide which is a toxin that affects the retina, the lens of the eye, the optic nerve, and causes inflammation within ocular tissues. It damages the formation of optic neural systems in your unborn child and the gene integrity that governs their future vision. Hydrogen cyanide is only one of many toxins produced by tobacco/paper/filter combustion that negatively affects eye health.

Some of the conditions cause by or aggravated by cigarette smoke include:

Smoking causes, aggravates, or increases the risk of all of these conditions, and others. To compound the problem, in a 2016 survey of Americans (average age 46) a third of them were unaware of cataracts or glaucoma, only half were aware of macular degeneration, and a little more than a third were aware of diabetic retinopathy.1 When smokers fall into these large unaware groups the consequences are severe.

Cataracts

Smoking research conclusively demonstrates that the habit significantly increases the risk of cataracts. For women who smoke more than a pack a day, the risk is 63% higher than not smoking; for men, it is 205% higher. Smoking also increases the development of cataracts in the front and edges of the eye lens in those aged 21 to 30.8 Large, very long term (40) studies substantiate the fact that smoking sharply increases the risk of developing cataracts.9, 10

Dry Eyes

Researchers have determined that cigarette smoke toxins impact the proper functioning of tear secretion and density of goblet cells (which secrete the mucous that lines the eyelids). The degree of damage increased with the amount of smoking.17

Fetal Optic Nerve Damage

The babies of mothers who smoke while pregnant are 10% more likely to begin life with damaged optic nerves. The babies born to smoking mothers have significantly thinner layers of retinal nerve fiber.18 Exposure to prenatal toxins from smoke also degrades the pigmented layers of the retina19 and also damages the nerve ganglions and the overall thickness of the retina.20

Glaucoma

Smokers have a much larger risk of developing glaucoma than non-smokers.9 There has been research to suggest that smoking marijuana reduces intraocular eye pressure – and it does, but only for several hours. In addition, because it reduces blood pressure it may reduce blood supply to the optic nerve and could thereby worsen vision. A recent review of the relationship between glaucoma and cigarette smoking found that the evidence for a causal link is stronger than as evidenced in past research.15 What is clear is that here is a strong connection between smoking and two of the other risk factors for glaucoma: cataracts and diabetes.

Macular Degeneration

Smoking has been found to significantly increase the risk of macular degeneration (AMD). It doubles the risk of developing macular degeneration and increases the risk of having the more serious wet form of the condition rather than the dry form. If AMD is detected early enough, stopping smoking can be somewhat reverse AMD or even stop the progression.11 Smokers with AMD are more likely to have larger macular lesions than non-smokers. Smokers with a genetic condition which in itself increases the risk also experience more serious developments of AMD than non-smokers.12 Other research has found that smokers’ macula tissue has higher levels of damage, higher levels of a biomarker associated with inflammation, and high levels of oxidative damage due to free radicals in the retinal pigmented layers.13

Macular Degeneration & Alzheimer’s. AMD is known as a retinal disease, but clinical studies have found a link between AMD and Alzheimer’s. The types of changes that take place in Alzheimer’s patients with AMD may be hastened by smoking cigarettes.11

Optic Nerve Damage

Smokers are 16 times as likely to develop conditions involving damaged optic nerves. For example, Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy is a disease of the optic nerve in which the mitochondria (the energy-producing cells) in the nerve cells of the retina are damaged. The deterioration occurs because certain genes do not express themselves properly. Some patients may have the genetic mutation which causes them to carry the mutated gene but not themselves experience the vision damage – mostly because the effectiveness of their physiology in fighting free radicals. However the toxins in cigarettes trigger the condition in at risk patients.14

Uveitis

Uveitis is caused by inflammation of the tissues of the eyes. Iritis refers to the frontal tissues, cyclitis refers to the ciliary bodies behind the iris, and choroiditis refers to blood vessel carrying tissues behind the ciliary body. People who smoke are more likely to develop uveitis as compared to non-smokers. Toxins in cigarette smoke cause tissue inflammation. The condition is initially an inflammatory disease, which can have infection complications. Smokers were almost twice as likely to develop the infectious complication, and more than twice as likely to develop the inflammatory non-infectious version.16

Toxins in Cigarettes

The list of harmful toxins posted by the FDA is daunting – more than 100 listed harmful and potential harmful substances, including some you’ve heard of such as ammonia, acetone, arsenic, benzene, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, hydrogen cyanide, lead, mercury, and uranium.

Hydrogen cyanide is produced by a chemical reaction when tobacco burns, rendering it unstable. The problem with hydrogen cyanide is that it inhibits the ability of the cells of almost every organ of the body, .

Benzene, another toxin produced by smoking, was found to cause many serious side effects in children exposed in an industrial accident, including vision difficulty.3 Benzene exposure contributes to cell death due to internal membrane hemorrhaging.4

Carbon monoxide is well known for its ability to deprive the body of oxygen resulting in serious health issues. One of the side effects of carbon monoxide poisoning is vision loss.5 Exposure can result in hemorrhaging of the retina and vitreous membranes.6 While these cases are of higher levels of poisoning than in a single cigarette, nonetheless the presence of the toxin has an impact on your vision.

‘Super-slim’ is a type of cigarette marketed in Canada which supposedly is less toxic. While it does contain less tobacco and has filters that lower the level of toxins inhaled, the level of formaldehyde and phenols is higher, leaving the cigarettes just as toxic as regular cigarettes.7

Summary

Repeated research finds that the toxins contained in cigarette smoke (and indeed, in may other sorts of environmental air pollutants) have a significant damaging effect on your vision and eye health and comfort. Such degradation of the parts of the eye needed for good vision is almost entirely more severe related to the amount and duration of smoking habits.

Therefore stopping smoking is one of the most important things for you to do to protect your precious vision.

Amino Acids

Amino acids are the building blocks for protein, including proteins such as S proteins and RGS proteins that researchers are identifying as critical to vision. Cysteine and taurine are two especially important vision amino acids. Read more about the role of food sources for amino acids.

Bioflavonoids

Bioflavonoids, a type of phytonutrient, are the naturally occurring yellow, red and blue pigments found in plants that protect your eyes from damage due to sunlight exposure. They are potent antioxidants that combat damage from free radicals and that appear to assist blood circulation to and within the retina. Carotenoids

Carotenoids such as luteinastaxanthin, and zeaxanthin are plant pigments that absorb blue light and that exist naturally in plants using photosynthesis, including not only the plants that we see daily but algae, some types of fungus and some bacteria. They are valuable antioxidants and help protect the eye from many eye diseases. Research has demonstrated that people who eat a lot of carotenoids are healthier and have fewer chronic illnesses in general. Interestingly, oils in fruits and vegetables are important for absorption of carotenoids. Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's)

Essential fatty acids are building blocks for fats in the body and are one of the fuel sources for energy in the cell. Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are needed by the body, in an appropriate ratio to maintain good vision and general health. Minerals

For good health and strong vision we want to include a wide range of minerals in our diet. If you drink reverse osmosis water, or other filtered water that has removed minerals naturally occurring in your water, you may want to consider adding them back by way of trace mineral solutions designed especially for RO water.

Trace minerals support biochemical processes in the body and have a role in building structure as well. Some minerals have an especially important role in vision Magnesium supports bone structure and helps break down ATP, an enzyme critical to cell metabolism. Similarly, zinc supports enzyme processes. Selenium is required for antioxidant enzyme activity. Chromium is sometimes not considered essential but it may have a role in metabolism of sugar. Other important minerals that support enzyme activity and/or have other important structural functions are potassium, sodium, phosphorus, iron, manganese, copper, and iodine. Vitamins

Vitamins play well known critical roles in the body and in vision. They are essential for many activities in the cells wither in reacting with other components to generate needed nutrients, contributing to energy product, or supporting antioxidant functions. Other Nutrients

There are other nutrients that support good vision that don’t fall into the above categories. These include: alpha lipoic acid and Coenzyme Q10 which support energy product within the cell, and garlic, which has been found to have many positive benefits for good vision health.

What are Free Radicals

First, it is important to understand what free radicals are. Free radicals are atoms that lack a particle called an electron, and, as a result, are very unstable. In the free radicals’ attempt to become stable, they attack other cells as they try to “steal” an electron. This attack harms the cells’ delicate membranes and makes them a target for disease.

When free radicals steal electrons from healthy cells it is called oxidation. Just like oxygen causes metal to rust, oxidation can also damage cells. In humans, the common signs of oxidative damage can be seen in the normal signs of aging: skin changes such as the appearance wrinkles, and ocular changes, including the development of cataracts and macular degeneration.

Carotenoids

These antioxidants are found in plant pigments.

Astaxanthin can be helpful in the prevention and treatment of macular degeneration; it also helps boost immune function.

Lutein protects the eye against blue and near-blue (ultra-violet) light, helpful for macular degeneration and other eye conditions.

Zeaxanthin Critical for health of the macula and helpful for macular degeneration and cataracts.

Enzymes

Glutathione is essential to the creation of tissue enzymes and is crucial to the prevention of free radical damage. While not exactly an enzyme, it is made up of enzymes. It is considered a super antioxidant because it neutralizes the full range of free radicals.

Super oxide dismutase is an enzyme that repairs cells and reduces the cell damage caused by super-oxide, the most common free radical in the body.

How do Antioxidants Help?

Antioxidants neutralize free radicals by donating an electron to these unstable atoms. After being neutralized, those free radicals will no longer attempt to damage cells, and therefore become less harmful to the body.

The body makes some of its own antioxidants including glutathione, super oxide dismutase, and coenzyme Q10. Nutrients such as selenium, riboflavin, zinc, and cysteine are needed to help the body produce these antioxidants.

Ultraviolet sun rays promote oxidation. If you stare at the midday sun, the UV rays can “oxidize” retinal cells at the back of the eyes, resulting in a short time in a loss of central vision. Similarly, the destruction of retinal cells can occur slowly over many years, from exposure to low levels of sunlight and/or from a gradual degradation of the antioxidant defense system.

Decreases in the level of antioxidants in the eyes as we age is believed to be a major factor in the decline of vision.
